Technical damage assessment before deciding on the repair method

Valuing bodywork damage takes more than measuring a dent's diameter. What matters is its depth, its position on the panel, the condition of the paint, the panel material, access to the damage, body lines, reinforcements and any previous repairs. With hail damage, the number of deformations and how they're spread across the whole surface come into play too.

Clevermot draws on experience gained from PDR repairs and bodywork projects to assess not just how the damage looks, but the actual labour and technology needed to remove it. This means the opinion can indicate whether PDR, a hybrid repair, preparation for repainting or another repair process is justified.

In PDR calculations it's important to organise the damage by size and level of difficulty. For hail damage we also analyse the number of dents on each panel. We treat aluminium panels separately, since they need a different working technique and can involve different labour than comparable damage on steel.

The opinion can be supplemented after dismantling, if information not visible during the first inspection comes to light. In practice this matters for previous repairs, hidden reinforcements, layers of filler, or damage on the inner side of the panel.

Process

How we work together

  1. 01

Determining the purpose of the opinion

We establish whether you need a valuation, a technology classification, an analysis of the damage scope, a technical consultation, or a review of an earlier assessment.

  2. 02

    Inspection and documentation

We check the damage under suitable lighting and document any spots that need measuring, dismantling or further analysis.

  3. 03

    Technical analysis

We assess the material type, the size and number of dents, access, the level of difficulty, and the expected repair technology.

  4. 04

    Opinion and recommendations

We deliver the result in the agreed format and discuss the conclusions and possible next steps.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about appraisal

Can a dent be accurately valued from a photo alone?
A photo can be enough for an initial assessment, but it doesn't always show the depth, access from the inside, reinforcements, previous repairs, or the actual number of small dents.
Why is a PDR light used during inspection?
The reflection of lines on the bodywork surface shows the edges of the deformation, high points and small dents. It's especially useful for hail damage.
Why are aluminium panels valued differently?
Aluminium reacts differently to shaping than steel and needs suitable tools and technique. Because of this, the labour involved can differ.
Can the repair classification change after dismantling?
Yes. Once access is gained, previous repairs, layers of filler, additional deformations or structural obstacles can come to light.
Can an opinion help with a dispute over the scope of repair?
Technical documentation and a justified calculation can help in discussions with an insurer, a workshop or another party. Its formal weight depends on the purpose and type of proceedings.
Do you provide consultations for workshops and companies?
Yes. The scope can include assessing unusual damage, PDR classification, hail-damage analysis, or support organising a larger project.
Does an appraisal mean the repair will be carried out straight away?
No. The purpose of the service is primarily assessment and a technical recommendation. The decision on further repair can be made separately.
