When is a local inspection especially useful?

It's worth coming in for an assessment when a photo doesn't clearly show the shape of the dent, the damage sits close to a reinforcement, or the car has been repaired before. A direct inspection also lets us check whether the upholstery or other trim needs to be removed to get safe access.

If the paint is cracked or the metal has been stretched too far, we don't push PDR. In that case we discuss a hybrid repair or preparing the panel for repainting.

What decides whether a paintless repair is possible

During a local inspection we can carefully check three key things: the condition of the paint coating, how the metal has behaved, and access to the deformation. The fact that the paint hasn't come off isn't always enough on its own. With a very sharp crease, the material may be badly stretched, and after a previous repair there may be filler under the paint that behaves differently during straightening.

A PDR quote isn't a simple calculation based on centimetres. A small, sharp dent on a body line can be more demanding than a larger, gentle deformation on a flat panel. Under shaded lighting we can see whether high points have formed around the centre, how the tension is distributed, and whether the edge of the dent is soft or sharply creased.
